You may not know, but some old household products and materials may contain deadly substances. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that has been widely used in many industries due to its durability, fire resistance, and non-conductivity. These unique characteristics make it a popular construction and manufacturing material. The problem is that asbestos can also cause malignant mesothelioma-a deadly cancer that can attack your lungs, abdomen, or the lining of your heart.
The link between asbestos and mesothelioma was not discovered until asbestos gained popularity in the United States as a so-called “magic mineral”. Once the dangers are known, the use of asbestos will decrease, but it can still be found in more than 3,000 known products. Besides, many types of older buildings and insulation materials that used asbestos in the past, if disturbed or damaged, can still release deadly fibers and cause mesothelioma.
